Case Studies
Here is a look at the work MCT has done with some of our business clients:
The challenge:
We were approached by the Human Resources (HR) team of a mid-sized manufacturing company to solicit the input of their employees in the creation of a new HR policy.
The workshop:
Initially, we held a discussion with HR leaders about the company’s key issues. We then used Forum Theatre techniques to work with head office staff and factory workers to help them better understand each other’s needs and perspectives. Upon arrival, we had noticed dispersed groups of factory workers. Through successful role-plays over the course of seven days, workers became more open and welcomed the ideation phase. The show was a tremendous success – we managed to hear the factory workers voices and opinions about managerial practices. It helped provide HR with a summary of the feedback generated through the workshops, along with recommendations they implemented in a new HR policy addressing the specific needs of all employees.
The challenge:
We were asked to present a show that would help understand and implement Bill 168, Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, in an educational institution.
The workshop:
We contributed to the Bill 168 efforts and helped to support positive social change in workplace community, by offering interactive Forum Theatre workshops. We consulted with the HR department, Dean’s office and faculty members to portray real life harassment and violence scenarios within the workplace. The scenes enacted and role-played were created to determine ways and practical means to deal with issues concerning violence and harassment between the administration and the faculty. Role-playing helped execute and implement the law within the workforce.
The challenge:
Help the newly amalgamated City of Toronto improve two-way communication and open up dialogue between city officials and citizens.
The workshop:
We worked with an integrated City task force to identify the blocks and situations citizens were experiencing with City Hall. Using Forum Theatre techniques, we started with the worst-case scenario, “You can’t fight City Hall,” and worked from there to identify ways in which City officials could be more accessible to their constituents. The show was hugely successful in creating a platform from which common citizens could gain access to City Hall and voice their concerns. It stirred up much civic action and opened lines of communication between the government and the people of Toronto.
