About MCT
Mixed Company Theatre (MCT) is a Toronto-based not-for-profit company that produces innovative, socially relevant drama as a tool for positive change. Founded as an artist-run collective in 1983, this nationally recognized company today uses Forum Theatre and interactive arts to Educate, Engage and Empower audiences in schools, communities, and workplaces. As the needs of marginalized communities across Canada shift, MCT’s process of creating theatre invites people to rehearse for real-life situations of oppression, thereby empowering communities to address these issues and make strides towards a better world for everyone.
About the Play
“Courageous Conversations” is a new Forum Theatre production written by Catherine Frid. The play is designed for post-secondary communities and engages with themes of disagreement, conflict, misinformation, inclusion, and communication challenges. It aims to help campus communities learn how to have difficult conversations while being respectful of different points of view, identities, cultures, and experiences.
Through three campus-based scenes, the play invites students, staff, and faculty to examine what happens when difficult conversations are avoided, mishandled, or pushed into online spaces. Rather than offering simple answers, “Courageous Conversations” creates a live, facilitated space where audiences can pause, reflect, intervene, and explore different ways of responding.
Actor Breakdowns
Experience in dramatic/realistic improvisation is an asset, as is knowledge of Forum Theatre/Theatre of the Oppressed. The casting needs for this project are as follows:
“Ash” / “President” / “Man” – played by the same male-identifying actor
- “Ash” is a student who strongly defends their work on a group project when it is questioned by other group members
- “President” is a student running a student club who struggles to manage conflict between club members with differing opinions on policy direction
- “Man” is a student who becomes confrontational when asked to leave by staff for designated women-only gym time
“Kai” / “Rae” / “Woman 1” – played by the same female-identifying actor
- 3 female-identifying post-secondary student characters
- “Kai” is a very organized student trying to keep all group members on track for a project
- “Rae” is a student club member who refuses to hear other perspectives on a policy discussion, believing her own perspective, built on internet research, should be the club’s stance
- “Woman 1” is a student who is quick to anger when a male student refuses to leave the gym for designated women-only gym time
Schedule and Rates
The exact schedule is still being confirmed but there will be a performance on October 23 at 1:00 pm at the University of Toronto – Scarborough campus with rehearsals scheduled between October 13 – 23. We may have some rehearsals and performances scheduled in August/September, should we receive additional bookings for this presentation.
Performers will be paid at industry rates for this engagement.
Auditions
Auditions will take place on August 24, 2026. Artists selected for an audition will be notified by email and asked to choose a timeslot on that date. Auditions will be online over Zoom. We thank all applicants for their interest but will only be contacting those selected for an audition.
