In partnership with Newcomer Women’s Services – Toronto, Mixed Company will facilitate a series of virtual Forum Theatre workshops for newcomer and refugee women. The series of ten virtual workshops will use Forum Theatre techniques such as improvisation, human sculpting, and image theatre to address the topic of newcomer challenges through a critical feminism lens.
The workshops will culminate in the performance of a Forum Theatre play presenting a “universal story” drawn from the collective experiences of the participants, and this production will be presented to a wider audience of newcomers and refugees to Canada. The Forum aspect of this performance will allow audience members to intervene and safely play out potential positive and feminist alternatives to situations to challenges faced by refugee and newcomer women.
Throughout the project, one staff from NEW will be provided active mentoring, expert guidance, and professional training to observe, facilitate, and practice Forum Theatre in future NEW projects. This virtual training initiative will be the first of many projects we plan to take on to spread the use and practice of FT and transform this artistic community engagement practice into a sustainable movement.
